Frequently Asked Questions About Running Pace

How do I calculate my running pace?+

Divide your total time by your distance. For example, 5 km in 30 minutes is a pace of 6:00 minutes per kilometre. The calculator also works the other way — enter a pace and distance to predict your finish time.

What is a good 5K time for a beginner?+

Most beginners finish a 5K in 30–40 minutes (6:00–8:00 min/km). Under 25 minutes is considered good for recreational runners, and under 20 minutes is fast for most age groups.

What pace do I need for a sub-2-hour half marathon?+

To run a half marathon (21.1 km) in under 2 hours, you need to average about 5:41 per kilometre (9:09 per mile). For a sub-4-hour marathon, aim for about 5:41 per kilometre over 42.2 km as well.

How can I run at a faster pace?+

Combine easy runs for aerobic base with one or two quality sessions per week — intervals, tempo runs or hill repeats — and add strength training. Increase weekly mileage by no more than about 10% to avoid injury.
